It's estimated that 1 in 7 school-age children have a mental health problem, like anxiety, depression and behaviour problems, but only 1 in 4 gets the help they need.

Most cases of children having mental health problems are first identified in their schools. A location where many children experience their first of firsts, childhood can often bring about some traumatic circumstance - even if they happen outside schools. In that sense, school's often always become a child's first line of defence and ensuring they get the help they need early and well ahead of time is critical to making sure they retain confidence, succeed, and combat their challenges.

Caused by many factors, a child's mental health can be easily affected. It's estimated that around one in seven Australian kids experience mental health issues and about half of all serious mental health issues in adulthood begin before the age of 14. One of the best approaches schools - and the teachers, principals, and administrators within them - can use is to recognise those students who need help and refer them to the right professionals - after involving and working with the child's parents and GP.
