At Murrumbeena Primary School, our vibrant house system fosters a sense of community, pride, and healthy competition. We have four houses: Marram (red), Gurborra (green), Yanggai (gold) and Dulaiwurrung (blue). Students are placed into one of these houses upon enrolment and remain in their house throughout their time at the school.
Each house is led by our dedicated Grade 6 House Captains, who inspire and motivate their peers. House spirit is celebrated through various events and activities, including our grade 3 to 6 swimming and athletics carnivals and our whole school cross country carnival.
To promote unity and enthusiasm, students are encouraged to wear their house-colored polo tops to school on the days they have Physical Education and on sports days. We love seeing our students get dressed up and actively participate in showing their house pride! This not only enhances school spirit but also helps develop leadership, teamwork, and a strong sense of belonging among our students.

Marram is a symbol of moving forwardtowards a positive future as the marram canonly move forward not backwards. The designs inside the marram depictcommunity, learning and growth. | The gurborra symbolises caring for others and never being greedy. One of the stories about the gurborra is that the gurborra wasstealing all the water collected by the people in the community andwould climb up the trees to hide. As the people would climb up andtry to get the water back, the gurborra would throw sticks down andthe people would fall. As punishment for his selfishness, Bunjil,Wurundjeri’s creator spirit (Wedge Tailed Eagle,) told the gurborra that they could never drink water again and could only eat gum leaves. The designs within the gurborra symbolise the mountains onWurundjeri country and caring for each other within your owncommunity and also everywhere. | The yanggai is one of the many spiritbirds. They tell us when it is going to rain. The designs within the wings depictraindrops and the designs throughout thebody and tail represents resilience, waterways and unity. | The dulaiwurrung is a symbol of never judging someonebefore getting to know them. The creation story for how the dulaiwurrung came to existis that ducks and water rats didn’t get along and weren’tallowed to communicate. One day, a duck made friendswith a water rat even after being told it was forbidden, they ended up falling in love. Their babies had a bill like theduck and a fury body like the water rat. The designs within the dulaiwurrung and in thebackground, represent waterways and the power ofhealing and health. |
